THE BIRDS
Watched Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS last night. I first saw it when I was a kid, so it was like watching it for the first time.
There are a few things that I really dug in it, including the feeling that the enemy is a physical manifestation of the sexuality between the two leads. I love how it starts off as a screwball romantic comedy — a meet-cute flick — that then takes a sharp left into horror film territory.
Most of all, I love how it’s the antithesis of PSYCHO. Psycho’s one of my favorite films of all time, but the explanation at the end always bothers me. Horror is uncertainty; horror is the unexplained. So, not knowing why our avian friends have started attacking us adds that extra layer of anxiety to the whole thing.
