50 GREATEST FICTIONAL BADASSES

#27 – SKURGE from Thor comic books. This is the one exception of putting a villain on the list. And it’s a good one. Skurge is a pretty fearsome dude in the Marvel Universe, sporting a bald head with one of those Mike Tyson Maori tattoos on it. In fact, he was Mike Tyson (if Mike Tyson was a white Asgardian who carried a mystical battle axe).

But there came a time when he accompanied Thor to the underworld to save some trapped souls. Long story short, they got the souls and the only way out was a bridge between Hel and the land of the living. Thor said he’d stay to guard the bridge from demons and let the others escape. Skurge sucker-punched him and took his place.

Skurge remained alone, armed with automatic rifles and a grim determination. The armies of Hel marched upon the bridge, but none crossed. Skurge stood his ground, drawing a line in the sand.  He was eventually overrun but the others escaped.

That kind of shit brings tears to my eyes. I love it. Redemption, stubbornness, heart. The stuff of legends.
